PHILMONT 2023

HIGH ADVENTURE in New Mexico

When: July 6 to July 20, 2023

Where: This adventure begins and ends in Redding.  In between are 15 days of high adventure over all the mountains associated with the greatest scout camp.  This includes Baldy Mountain 12,441’, the highest point on their property, with lots of opportunity for personal challenge and growth, fun and good Scouting.  Mr. Walsh, our backpacking Merit Badge Counselor, trained and well-equipped adventurer extraordinaire, is organizing and leading the contingent on the conquest of very high places.

Who Can Go: This trip is primarily designed for First Class Scouts.  A youth must be 14 years of age OR 13 years of age and completed the 8th grade by date of participation. Youth must be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America and have prepared themselves for a very rigorous, high elevation trek. The Scout must be able to carry at least 25% of his body weight up and over very rough terrain at an elevation of 6400’ to 12,441’ above sea level. This event is limited to 10 boys and 10 girls on a first come, first served basis.

Cost: $3,000.00 (roughly) Price includes a $150 non-refundable deposit and all normal trip costs from the time we leave Redding until we get back to Redding…except for any souvenirs and extras your scout wants to purchase.

Trip Overview: This adventure starts on July 6th at 5:00 am on Thursday in Redding. We will fly to Denver Colorado where we will be picked up by a tour company and visit the Red Rocks Amphitheater and the Air Force Academy on the way to Great Wolf Lodge for a 2- night stay. On Day 2, we will see The Garden of the Gods, then ride the Cog Railway to the top of Pike’s Peak (14,115’ high).  On Day 3, we are driven to Philmont, arriving about 10:00am, in time for lunch and to begin the check in process.  Day 4 we are on the trail.  We will hike between 5 miles to 10 miles each day with time for activities in the afternoon at most camps.  After 10 nights on the trail, we return to Philmont Base camp.

The contingent returns to Redding late on Thursday July 20th evening, tired but euphoric over another great accomplishment.  For your effort, you will forever be justified to call yourself “A Mountain Man” and have 15 days worth of new memories!!

If this is a challenge you would like to take part in, please contact your Scout Master for further information.

Additional information can be sent to those interested in a detailed trip itinerary.

YIS,

Mr. Walsh
